July 4th Event Timeline:

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Assemble in front of the Ann Pamela Cunningham (APC) Administration Building after entering (free) through Mount Vernon’s Purple Heart Gate (pedestrians only). . Parking: Please park in Mount Vernon's public parking areas. Participants may enter free through Mount Vernon's Purple Heart Gate.

9:00 AM We will receive instructions, form up, and prepare to proceed from the APC assembly area to the west end of the Bowling Green Gate. After arriving there, we will wait for the “green light” from Mount Vernon’s Event staff to begin marching up the Bowling Green toward the Mansion at approximately 9:30 AM. After marching through the Bowling Green, we will proceed to the Tomb Grove with a planned ceremony start time at 10:00 AM.

Approximately 10:30 AM, after the Tomb Grove ceremony, we will proceed to the Tomb itself for the wreath presentation and carnation placements. (There will be a single wreath presented which will represent all organizations present.) The day's ceremony is expected to conclude by 11:00 AM.

Afterward, we will return to the Tomb Grove for group photographs.

Details:

Entry: Free to event participants. Please enter through Mount Vernon’s Purple Heart Gate (for pedestrian traffic only) which is located approximately 150 feet to the left of the front, arched entrance (the “Texas Gate”) at Mount Vernon. If locked, use the Purple Heart Gate callbox and state that you are there for the "SAR March to the Tomb". Once admitted and you pass through the gate, bear right for a short walk to the front of the APC Building where we will assemble.

Special Arrangements: Golf cart transportation departing from the APC Building to the Tomb Grove, and from the Tomb returning to the APC Building, will be available for those requiring a lift rather than marching and walking the entire way to and from the Tomb area.

Medal for First-Time SAR Participants: Members of the SAR participating in their first Fourth of July March to the Tomb of General Washington are eligible to receive the George Washington Chapter’s Baldwin-Tabb-Jones Medal, commemorative of the March to the Tomb event. A George Washington Chapter member will be administering the Medals in the assembly area at the APC Administration Building before the March. Award of the full-size Medal is without charge; the miniature/formal version of the Medal may be purchased for $10. (Please bring exact cash if purchasing the $10 miniature/formal size of the Medal.)

Marching Order: Virginia SAR President and Color Guard Commander; Colors/Color Guard (including DAR & SAR flags); fife & drum; SAR Honor Guard; and SAR, DAR, and C.A.R. participants. (Family members are invited to march with the SAR, DAR, and C.A.R. participants.)
