Updates or corrections to the published schedule should be submitted to the VASSAR Color Guard Commander.

Guardsmen should evaluate their ability to participate in physically stressful conditions.  Event Color Guard Commanders will conduct a safety walk-through of the venue before the event commences and raise safety-related issues (e.g., heat index, trip hazards, etc.) with the event coordinator for resolution and mitigation.  ALL firelocks brought to the event will be safety-checked before the event commences -- without exception.  Firelocks that do not pass or have not been safety-checked will not be permitted at the event site.

In case of a VASSAR-related accident/incident, the VASSAR Accident/Incident Report form (clickable link updated February 2023) is also provided in the Resource Section (see pull down tab).  Event coordinators are strongly encouraged to have a blank paper copy available

Insurance:  VASSAR insurance coverage does not extend to non-VASSAR members, such as DAR, C.A.R., or re-enactors. Event coordinators should critically review any non-VASSAR individual participation in our color guards (especially in a black powder firing event) if the participating individual's organization is not covered by an insurance company.  If in doubt, contact the VASSAR Insurance Advisor, Compatriot Richard Rankin.  As of December 2023, VASSAR has exchanged Certificates of Insurance (COI) with the following State SAR Societies: GA, KY, NC, NH, NJ, PA, SC, TN, and WVA.  It also holds COIs from the 1st and 7th VA Regiments (reenactors).  It should be noted that not every SAR State Society currently has liability insurance.

Details: This is a national-level event sponsored by the General Francis Marion Chapter, SCSSAR.  The Battle of Waxhaws (also known as Buford's massacre) took place during the American Revolutionary War on May 29, 1780, near Lancaster, South Carolina, between a Continental Army force led by Abraham Buford and a mainly Loyalist force led by British officer Banastre Tarleton. Buford refused an initial demand to surrender, but when Tarleton's cavalry attacked his men, many threw down their arms to surrender. Buford attempted to surrender. However, the British commanding officer Tarleton was shot at during the truce, causing his horse to fall and trap him. Loyalists and British troops were outraged at the breaking of the truce in this manner and proceeded to fall on the rebels.  While Tarleton was trapped under his dead horse, men continued killing the Continental soldiers, including those not resisting. A little quarter was given to the patriots/rebels. Of the 400 or so Continentals, 113 were killed with sabers, 150 so severely injured they could not be moved, and the British and Loyalists took 53 prisoners. "Tarleton's quarter" became a common expression for refusing to take prisoners. In some subsequent battles in the Carolinas, few of the defeated were taken alive by either side. This 'Battle of Waxhaws’ became the subject of an intensive propaganda campaign by the Continental Army to bolster recruitment and incite resentment against the British. Equally plausible accounts of the battle by soldiers from both sides describe Tarleton as having no part in ordering a massacre as he had been trapped under his horse. When freed, he immediately ordered medical treatment of American prisoners and the wounded.  Video here:  Buford's Massacre

Armed Forces Day honors those currently serving in the military, and Veterans Day honors men and women who have previously served in the United States armed forces.
The National Moment of Remembrance: On May 3, 2000, a “National Moment of  Remembrance” was established. This is observed at 3 pm local time on Memorial Day to pause and remember those who died in defense of our Nation. The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. INFORMATION: June 14th, 2024, Friday – 249th Anniversary of the US Army
Event Level: Not a National Event for Color Guard medal purposes.

On 14 June 1775, Congress "Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia… [and] as soon as completed, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army."
The delegates then prescribed an oath of enlistment that required the soldiers to swear:
“I have, this day, voluntarily enlisted myself, as a soldier, in the American continental army, for one year, unless sooner discharged: And I do bind myself to conform, in all instances, to such rules and regulations, as are, or shall be, established for the government of the said. Army.”
The next day Congress voted to appoint George Washington “to command all the Continental forces” and began laying the foundation for "the American army."

INFORMATION: June 14th, 2024, Friday - Flag Day
Event Level: Not a National Event for Color Guard medal purposes.

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 every year and commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States. In 1777, the second continental congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation”. George Washington’s troops now had a new, unified flag to represent their cause.  A brief discussion on the Hopkinson and Betsy Ross flags may be found here (link): Hopkinson
There were few public ceremonies that honored the flag until June 14, 1877, when it was flown from every government building for the centennial of the flag’s adoption. After that, many citizens and organizations advocated the adoption of a National Day of Commemoration for the flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson unofficially declared June 14 as Flag Day.
Coincidentally, Wilson also proclaimed “The Star-Spangled Banner” the U.S. national anthem that same year. Nonetheless, Congress did not designate the song as the national anthem until 1931, and only in 1949 did President Harry Truman sign the legislation that made June 14 of each year Flag Day.

Details: Daniel Morgan (1735/1736 – July 6, 1802) was an American pioneer, soldier, and politician from Virginia. One of the most respected battlefield tacticians of the American Revolutionary War of 1775–1783, he later commanded troops during the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1791–1794.
Born in New Jersey to Welsh immigrants, Morgan settled in Winchester, Virginia. He became an officer of the Virginia militia and recruited a company of riflemen at the start of the Revolutionary War. Early in the war, Morgan served in Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec and in the Saratoga campaign. He also served in the Philadelphia campaign before resigning from the army in 1779.
Morgan returned to the army after the Battle of Camden and led the Continental Army to victory in the Battle of Cowpens. After the war, Morgan retired from the army again and developed a large estate. He was recalled to duty in 1794 to help suppress the Whiskey Rebellion and commanded a portion of the army that remained in Western Pennsylvania after the rebellion. Morgan, a member of the Federalist Party, ran for the United States House of Representatives twice, winning the House election in 1796. He retired from Congress in 1799 and died in 1802.

Details: On the morning of July 6, 1781, Lafayette accompanied his advance guard under the command of General Anthony Wayne. Upon reaching Green Spring, the Americans began skirmishing with pickets under the command of Banastre Tarleton. Lafayette, believing that he had caught the rearguard of the British army, called for the rest of his force to join the battle.  As Wayne formed up, Lafayette examined the field. Riding forward, he noted a large group of men in red coats formed in lines. Realizing that Cornwallis had set a trap, Lafayette galloped back to the advance guard under Wayne, but it was too late.  Advancing with several regiments, Wayne marched right into a veteran British brigade commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Dundas. Dundas’s Brigade smashed through the American right flank with a decisive bayonet charge while the American left was hard-pressed by British light infantry.  Lafayette gave the order for the entire American force to withdraw. Wayne’s men formed a rearguard. For fifteen minutes, the two sides blazed away at each other. Eventually, Wayne decided that the carnage was too great for his men and ordered a retreat.

One comment from the Drillmaster: "The POW / MIA flag is always posted alone before the ceremony without any ceremony for its posting. It is helpful if it is posted near the missing man table... Posting it near the table, which is off on its own, creates a special place for both as a whole."

The Battle of Kings Mountain was fought on October 7, 1780, and destroyed the left wing of Lord Cornwallis' army, effectively ending Loyalist ascendance in the Carolinas. The victory halted the British advance into North Carolina, forced Lord Cornwallis to retreat from Charlotte into South Carolina, and allowed General Nathanael Greene to reorganize the American Army. The Patriot force of about 1,400 men was under the overall command of Colonel William Campbell, Virginia Militia.
In "The Winning of the West," SAR Compatriot President Theodore Roosevelt wrote of Kings Mountain, "This brilliant victory marked the turning point of the American Revolution." Thomas Jefferson called it "The turn of the tide of success". SAR Compatriot President Herbert Hoover at the sesquicentennial commemoration at the site of the battle, said, "This small band of Patriots turned back a dangerous invasion well designed to separate and dismember the united Colonies. It was a little army and a little battle, but it was of mighty portent. History has done scant justice to its significance, which rightly should place it beside Lexington, Bunker Hill, Trenton, and Yorktown."  {Hoover's full sesquicentennial address may be reached here: Speech.]
In 1931, the Congress of the United States created the Kings Mountain National Military Park at the site of the battle.

A 13 October 1775 resolution of the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy with “a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible despatch, for a cruise of three months….” After the American War of Independence, the U.S. Constitution empowered the new Congress “to provide and maintain a navy.” Acting on this authority, Congress established the Department of the Navy on 30 April 1798.
In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized official recognition of 13 October as the birthday of the U.S. Navy. Since then, each CNO has encouraged a Navy-wide celebration of this occasion “to enhance a greater appreciation of our Navy heritage and to provide a positive influence toward pride and professionalism in the naval service.”

The culmination of the Yorktown campaign, the siege proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War in the North American region, as the surrender by Cornwallis, and the capture of both him and his army, prompted the British government to negotiate an end to the conflict.

INFORMATION: November 10th, 2024, Sunday – 249th Anniversary of the US Marine Corps
Event Level:
Not a National Event for Color Guard medal purposes.

On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that "two Battalions of Marines be raised" for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. Serving on land and at sea, these first Marines distinguished themselves in a number of important operations, including their first amphibious raid into the Bahamas in March 1776 under the command of Captain (later Major) Samuel Nicholas. The first commissioned officer in the Continental Marines, Nicholas remained the senior Marine officer throughout the American Revolution and is considered to be the first Marine Commandant. The Treaty of Paris in April 1783 brought an end to the Revolutionary War, and as the last of the Navy's ships were sold, the Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence.
Following the Revolutionary War and the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on 11 July 1798, Marines saw action in the quasi-war with France, landed in Santo Domingo, and took part in many operations against the Barbary pirates along the "Shores of Tripoli".

INFORMATION: November 11th, 2023, Saturday - Veterans Day Commemorations
Event Level: National

Originally known as Armistice Day, in recognition of when the guns fell silent at the 11th hour of the 11th day, November 1918. This day continues to be celebrated in some other countries as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.  The US changed the name of the national holiday to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954, at the urging of WWII and Korean veterans.
Veterans Day honors the service of all US military Veterans who have served, while Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service to the nation.  The official theme of Veterans Day 2024 will be announced later in the year.
Perhaps not widely known is how the red poppy became a symbol of this national holiday.
In November 1918, a young woman by the name of Moina Belle Michael -- a Daughter of the American Revolution -- was so moved by a Canadian war poet's work ("In Flanders Fields") that she wrote her own poem in response and bought 24 red silk poppies from Wanamaker's in NYC.  At the time, she was on a sabbatical from the University of Georgia to help Veterans in New York.  The American and British Legions adopted her promotion of the red poppy as a symbol to rally public support for caring for veterans.  In 1924, General "Black Jack" Pershing wrote to Moina, “I wish to congratulate you on the splendid patriotic service you have rendered in conducting the sale of poppies on Armistice Day each year for the relief and benefit of war sufferers.”
And so, wearing the poppy on this day honors Veterans and keeps alive the memory of a young DAR Georgia teacher who raised millions to support Veterans by selling poppies.
