RCL Heat Index: Details: The battle, which culminated on July 9, 1776, was a signal victory for the Patriots because it resulted in John Murray, the Earl of Dunmore, the last Royal Governor of Virginia, leaving Virginia for good. The victory at Cricket Hill was the first victory by an American force after the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
