Fairfax Resolves Chapter Honors President David L. Peters with SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Medal

FAIRFAX, Va. — November 16, 2025—The Fairfax Resolves Chapter of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), proudly presented the SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Certificate and Medal to Chapter President David L. Peters during the chapter’s November luncheon. The award was conferred in recognition of his distinguished career in federal law enforcement and his enduring commitment to public service.

The presentation was made by Chapter Past President, the Hon. Jon Rymer, who read the official citation and bestowed the certificate and medal before chapter members and guests. The ceremony underscored SAR’s mission to honor individuals who exemplify courage, integrity, and dedication in safeguarding the nation.

Honoring Veterans: Virginia SAR Chapters Unite Across the Commonwealth

Across the Commonwealth of Virginia, chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) came together in a powerful display of patriotism and remembrance to honor America’s veterans. From historic estates to small-town cemeteries, their presence was felt in ceremonies, parades, and memorial dedications that paid tribute to those who served.

Mount Vernon Tribute by George Washington Chapter

The George Washington Chapter hosted its annual Veterans Day commemoration at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens. A solemn wreath-laying ceremony honored both General George Washington and Mrs. Martha Washington. The event was co-sponsored by the Kate Waller Barrett Chapter NSDAR and featured participation from the Virginia SAR Color Guard and Scouting America Troop 113 of Alexandria. Distinguished guests included National SAR President General Michael Elston, past President General Joe Dooley, and chapter president Scot Bryant.  Chapter treasurer David Harrity served as master of ceremonies.

Philadelphia, Pa. – October 13, 2025—The National Parade honoring the birth of the United States Navy on October 13, 1775 and birth of the United States Marine Corps November 10, 1775 was held in Philadelphia, Pa., on October 13. Philadelphia was the location where both the Navy and Marine Corps were founded. Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter participated in the parade with a float towed by owner and Chapter member Warner Workman. Chapter President Barry Schwoerer rode the float wearing his Navy dress blue uniform and Chapter Vice President Mark Sink rode the float wearing his Marine Corps dress blue uniform. Virginia SAR Color Guard Commander Brett Osborn dressed in Navy Slops, and two Compatriots from the Pennsylvania SAR also rode the float. The float was decorated with graphics depicting Revolutionary War Navy and Marine Corps founders and leaders, Revolutionary War battles and famous ships of the early Navy. The SMJC Float was the only SAR float, and most visible SAR participant in the parade.

When Civics was taught in our public education system students memorized and later recited passages of many of our nations’ seminal documents – the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Even to this day I can recall from memory many of these passages that not only defined our nation but shaped the minds and development of those who were fortunate at an early age to be exposed to the philosophy and thinking of America’s Founders. The powerful and timeless message contained in President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address still rings true and in view of our current political divisiveness and deserves reexamining. 

To refresh your memory, the address was delivered by President Lincoln on November 19, 1863, during the dedication of Soldiers' National Cemetery  known today as Gettysburg National Cemetery. This hallowed ground was where the brutal Battle of Gettysburg - the high-water mark of the Confederacy - was fought four and one-half months earlier. The Civil War was America’s most brutal and costly war fought in an effort to save the unity our nascent nation. To this day its scars are forever seared into our national psyche even though it occurred well over one hundred years ago. 

Honoring Five Revolutionary Patriots in Lovettsville

Grave Marking Ceremony at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church

Lovettsville, VA — November 2, 2025 On a beautiful autumn day, more than 60 SAR compatriots, DAR members, and guests gathered at the historic New Jerusalem Lutheran Church to honor five Revolutionary War patriots interred in its cemetery. The event was hosted by the Fairfax Resolves Chapter (Virginia SAR), Sergeant Major John Champe Chapter (Virginia SAR), and Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter (Maryland SAR).

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Oct. 26, 2025—James Madison University Police Chief Anthony Matos was presented a Law Enforcement Commendation and Medal on October 23, 2025 during a division meeting held at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.

Fort Harrison Chapter SAR compatriot Randy Atkins gave an overview of the SAR to the nearly 1000 people in attendance including JMU leadership; he spoke of the history, goals and positive impact of the SAR on the local area communities and the long-standing connection between the Fort Harrison Chapter SAR and the University. Wes Dove read the nomination letter, and Ros Poplar presented the certificate and medal.

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Oct. 26, 2025—At its recent chapter meeting held on October 21 at the Wood Grill Buffet, the Fort Harrison Chapter SAR was honored to have as its guest speaker, compatriot Richard Rankin who gave an inspiring presentation to the Chapter on George Washington's formative years on the American Frontier.

This presentation was especially relevant for the Fort Harrison Chapter as much as this occurred within close proximity from the colonial Fort Harrison from which the Chapter derives its name. Richard is the Virginia SAR's Risk Manager and also co-chairman for National SAR Insurance and Risk Management Committee and spoke on this important issue. It was an honor to have him speak and make the long drive "up" the Valley from his home chapter (George Washington Chapter) in Northern Virginia! Honoring Patriot George Estes: A New Patriot Burials® Marker Dedicated in South Boston

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. — September 9, 2025—A quiet corner of Oak Ridge Cemetery came alive with patriotic pride as the Dan River Chapter of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), hosted a moving dedication ceremony for a newly installed Patriot Burials® marker honoring George Estes (1763–1859) and Robert Easley (1754–1814), both Revolutionary War patriots. The marker, funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and facilitated through Virginia SAR’s Patriot Burials® initiative, stands as a lasting tribute to their service and legacy.

The event drew a strong turnout from both SAR and DAR members, as well as descendants of George Estes, who gathered to pay their respects and celebrate the installation. The Dan River Chapter Color Guard presented the colors with solemn dignity, setting the tone for a ceremony steeped in remembrance and gratitude.

Thomas H. Bland (1948–2025)

Thomas “Tom” Henry Bland, 76, of Burke, VA, died surrounded by family at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC and he gained his angel wings on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 3:31 PM.

Born in Raleigh, NC on November 2, 1948, Tom entered the world with a built-in best friend- his identical twin brother Bill of Waco, TX- proving early that life doubles the trouble AND the fun. The son of Dorothy Heater and William Archibald Bland, he grew up with a love of service that led him to Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America and later to Goldsboro High School (Class of ’66). He earned a Business Administration degree from East Carolina University in 1971, and later a Master’s in Education from Old Dominion University.

Uncasville, CT (July 15, 2025) — During a stirring awards ceremony held at the Mohegan Sun Earth Conference Center, the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) emerged as a dominant force at the 135th Annual Congress, earning accolades across nearly every category of recognition. From youth education to chapter excellence, Virginia SAR and its chapters demonstrated an unwavering commitment to patriotism, historical preservation, and community engagement.

Chapter and Individual Honors

• General William Campbell Chapter SAR received the Ohanesian History Presentation Award for chapters with 10–49 members.
• Brian Bayliss of the Colonel James Wood II Chapter earned an Honorable Mention in the Thomas J. Bond, Jr. Memorial Photography Award.
• Chris Yohn, editor of the Liberty Gazette, was honored with an Honorable Mention in the Carl F. Bessent Award for outstanding chapter newsletters.
• National Meritorious Service Medal (Gold): Jeff Thomas
  
• National Roger Sherman Commendation Medal (Gold): Ernie Coggins, Peter Davenport, Jeff Thomas
  
• National Henry Knox Achievement Medal (Gold): Biff Greaf, Scott Walker, Anita Bonner (wife of Kenneth Bonner)
  
• Bronze Liberty Medals were awarded to eight Compatriots for recruiting 10+ new members, including William F. Crain, William M. Haskins, Jr. (2), Kenneth L. Hawkins (2), Bruce A. Taylor, Barry F. Schwoerer, Kenneth E. Morris, and Richard M. Sherman.

Youth & Education Impact

Virginia SAR earned a Participation Streamer for its involvement in five national youth contests:

The Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter SAR was busy commemorating Independence with four parades and two readings of the Declaration of Independence. A float owned by member Warner Workman participated in: The June 27 Star Spangled South Riding parade and display, the July 3 Lovettsville Parade, the July 4 Leesburg parade, and the July 4 Middletown parade in support of the Col. James Wood II (CJW-II) Chapter SAR. The chapter sponsored a Reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Historic Loudoun County Courthouse the morning of July 4, then supported the CJW-II Chapter at a Reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 5 in Front Royal at the Warren County Courthouse with a 1/3 size Liberty Bell.

At the Loudoun County Courthouse Reading of the Declaration of Independence, four elected officials were readers: Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk and Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Sylvia Glass, Juli Briskman and Kriten Umstattd. The Reverend John Marks Society Children of the American Revolution (Virginia C.A.R.) provided ten members, two who passed out programs, three who read portions of the Declaration, and eight who led the Pledge of Allegiance. Ten members of SMJC participated along with ten ladies from four DAR Chapters.

On a sunlit morning worthy of the occasion, over one hundred compatriots, allied guests and family members gathered on the historic grounds of Mount Vernon for the 64th Annual Independence Day March to General George Washington’s Tomb. The event commemorated the 249th anniversary of American Independence, a solemn moment etched in remembrance and reverence for the spirit of 1776.

Leading the contingent across the Bowling Green to the Tomb Grove was the majestic procession of the Virginia SAR Color Guard. Clad in regimental Continental uniforms and vivid militia regalia, the Virginia SAR Color Guard and Maryland SAR Color Guard—joined by the Virginia DAR Honor Guard and Virginia C.A.R. Honor Guard—brought history to life with each measured step. Their presence embodied the legacy of citizen-soldiers who once bore the nation's earliest burdens. Virginia SAR compatriots from Col. Fielding Lewis Chapter, Col. James Wood II Chapter, Col. William Grayson Chapter, Culpeper Minutemen Chapter, Fairfax Resolves Chapter, George Mason Chapter, Norfolk Chapter, Sgt. Maj. John Champe Chapter, and Williamsburg Chapter, along with John Paul Jones Chapter Maryland SAR were present for the festivities hosted by the George Washington Chapter, Virginia SAR.

Surgeon General's War Report: Surgeon General’s War Report to Virginia’s Army Surgeons, 1775

One of my favorite hymns was Julia Ward Howe’s "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Like our national anthem this song brings a chill to my spine every time I hear it. I can only imagine my Great-Great Grandfather Private William H. Baldwin who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor marching to it in his quest to free those in bondage. He was just a simple and poor Chesapeake Bay waterman but voluntarily answered the call to serve and paid dearly with his life leaving behind a family.

Howe's lyrics inspired Americans to action at one of the most critical times in our history when the nation was torn asunder and our fragile experiment in Democracy could have easily ended. My mind can still see the imagery of soldiers marching to their death in the name of Christ to unify the nation and eliminate the scourge of slavery:
