250th Anniversary of the Burning of Norfolk Commemoration Held Virtually

On January 31, 2026, members of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Children of the American Revolution gathered online to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Burning of Norfolk, one of the earliest and most consequential turning points in America’s fight for independence. Originally planned as an outdoor ceremony in Norfolk, the event shifted indoors and onto Zoom due to cold and inclement weather. Despite the change in format, the commemoration retained its full historical depth and collaborative spirit. The event was part of the ongoing Road to Revolution series and was co‑hosted by the Norfolk Chapter SAR, the Great Bridge Chapter, NSDAR, and the Old Cannonball Society, N.S.C.A.R. Together, these three organizations highlighted the significance of the January 1, 1776 destruction of Norfolk—a moment when Loyalist resistance collapsed, Patriot resolve strengthened, and Virginia’s path toward independence accelerated.

MARTINSVILLE, VA —The Colonel George Waller Chapter of the Virginia Sons of the American Revolution (Virginia SAR) will start the new year with a 2026 Chapter Kickoff Dinner on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 6:00 P.M., at Hugo’s Restaurant & Sports Bar in Uptown Martinsville.

Henry County Sheriff Wayne Davis (photo right) will be the guest speaker who will share insights into current developments in local law enforcement and discuss the evolution of the recently adopted 1777 Sheriff’s Department uniform patch which honors the County’s 249-year history.

During the dinner, the chapter will present Sheriff Davis with the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal in recognition of his distinctive service and devotion in the field of law enforcement and public safety. Also, Scott Norman will receive the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal in recognition of his noteworthy community achievements. A brief report from the Annual Convention of the Virginia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution
will be presented, sharing any awards received.

HARRISONBURG, Va. — January 7, 2026 — The Fort Harrison Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution participated in a Naturalization Ceremony at the United States District Court, Western District of Virginia. With the Honorable Joel C. Hoppe, United States Magistrate Judge, presiding, thirty‑nine applicants from twenty‑four countries and five continents became the newest citizens of the United States of America. Many recounted the sacrifices and hardships they endured on their long journey to this momentous day.

After taking the Oath of Allegiance, each new citizen was given the opportunity to share their personal story—many describing years of waiting, experiences of political persecution, and the hope that carried them forward. Although hesitant at first, once the first individual spoke, a floodgate of emotion opened. Several described their pursuit of a better life for themselves and their families, and all expressed that this day marked one of the proudest moments of their lives. They emphasized that they did not take the responsibilities of American citizenship lightly.

Join the Dan River Chapter for the 2026 Crossing of the Dan Commemoration

Each February, the Sons of the American Revolution gather to honor one of the most remarkable strategic achievements of the Southern Campaign: the Crossing of the Dan. On February 14, 1781, General Nathanael Greene’s masterful retreat across the icy Dan River preserved the Continental Army in the South and set the stage for the victories that ultimately secured American independence.

The Dan River Chapter SAR and the Crossing of the Dan Committee warmly invite all SAR compatriots, DAR members, families, guests, and community supporters to attend this year’s commemoration and related events. The 2026 observance promises to be a meaningful tribute to the patriot forces whose endurance and determination changed the course of the war.

Virginia SAR Announces Formation of the New Abraham Brown Chapter

RICHMOND, VA — January 1, 2026 — The Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, is beginning the new year with a significant milestone in its statewide growth and outreach. President Michael E. Weyler, Ph.D., has announced plans to charter a new chapter that will expand the Society’s presence in the heart of the Commonwealth.

The forthcoming Abraham Brown Chapter will serve compatriots and prospective members in Charles City County and New Kent County, two regions rich with Revolutionary‑era history and enduring patriotic legacy. The chapter’s namesake, Abraham Brown (SAR Patriot P-329970), was a free African American farmer from Charles City who supplied beef to the Continental Army—an essential contribution to sustaining Patriot forces during the struggle for independence. Honoring Brown through the chapter’s name reflects the Virginia SAR’s commitment to recognizing the diverse individuals who supported the American cause.

Celebrating Growth Since Independence Day: Welcoming New Members and Honoring Supplemental Achievements

RICHMOND, VA — January 1, 2026 — Since July 4, 2025, the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) has experienced a remarkable surge in membership activity. We proudly recognize the addition of 127 new compatriots and the approval of 65 supplemental applications from 27 chapters, bringing our grand total to 192 new and supplemental recognitions.

This growth reflects not only the expanding interest in honoring Revolutionary War ancestors but also the commitment of existing members to deepen their genealogical connections.

America’s 250th Birthday not by accident but by design

This year marks a major milestone in our history – our 250th birthday officially known as our “semi-quincentennial.” This obviously is a once in a lifetime event which pays tribute to our nation, which despite its flaws continues to serve as the leader of the free world. When the Colonies declared their independence from then the most powerful nation in world – Great Britain – the chances of forming a new
nation were minuscule at best. Had it not been for the nexus of three factors: George Washington, Divine intervention, and the influence of sea power we would not be the nation we are today.

George Washington - not a perfect military leader by any means and his mistakes were many but the right man at the right time in our history. Like Dwight Eisenhower, he may have not had the battlefield brilliance and aggressiveness of a George Patton, but he had the innate ability to keep his army motivated even though his soldiers would go for months without pay or provisions. George Washington's leadership was characterized by his unwavering commitment to the greater good, strategic prowess, and ability to inspire and unite diverse individuals.

Watching this year’s endless cycle of both political and domestic violence perpetrated not only on national figures such as Charlie Kirk but also on an innocent subway rider who came to America to escape the violence of Ukraine only to be stabbed to death leaves me not only saddened but perplexed and bewildered. As a “Boomer” I was raised and influenced by the men and women of America’s Greatest Generation and wonder what they would think of the current sad state of affairs in our nation. Theirs was the generation that bore witness to the catastrophic consequences of misguided ideologies not based on truth, wisdom, and belief in the all mighty but rather on the false prophets of Communism  and Socialism. 

To our forefathers and mothers these were not just idlepolitical theories but rather the cruel realities  put into practice that benefited the power elites and not the masses. Many of the Greatest Generation stepped forward during some of America’s darkest hours and paid dearly with their lives to stop its insidious spread.They saw firsthand how totalitarian regimes manipulated idealistic language  promising much like today - equity, freedom, and justice - while systematically implementing  oppression and violenceon those subjugated caught under its enigmatic spell. 

George Mason and George Washington Chapters Host Joint Meeting at Mount Vernon Country Club

MOUNT VERNON, VA – September 13, 2025—The George Mason Chapter and the George Washington Chapter of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, held a distinguished joint meeting at the Mount Vernon Country Club, bringing together more than seventy compatriots, guests, and community partners for an evening that blended ceremony, fellowship, and historical reflection.

A Gathering of Distinguished Guests

The afternoon opened with a warm welcome and the introduction of several honored guests whose presence underscored the importance of the occasion. Among them were Dr. Weyler, President of the Virginia SAR; Meredith Hopkins, President of the Virginia C.A.R.; and F. Anderson Morse, Executive Director of The Society of the Cincinnati. Leaders from the Kate Waller Barrett and Nelly Custis Chapters of the NSDAR—Regents Meg Kane and Suzann Gallagher—were also in attendance, along with Susan Johnson, Chair of the George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee.

Fairfax Resolves Chapter Honors President David L. Peters with SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Medal

FAIRFAX, Va. — November 16, 2025—The Fairfax Resolves Chapter of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), proudly presented the SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Certificate and Medal to Chapter President David L. Peters during the chapter’s November luncheon. The award was conferred in recognition of his distinguished career in federal law enforcement and his enduring commitment to public service.

The presentation was made by Chapter Past President, the Hon. Jon Rymer, who read the official citation and bestowed the certificate and medal before chapter members and guests. The ceremony underscored SAR’s mission to honor individuals who exemplify courage, integrity, and dedication in safeguarding the nation.

Honoring Veterans: Virginia SAR Chapters Unite Across the Commonwealth

Across the Commonwealth of Virginia, chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) came together in a powerful display of patriotism and remembrance to honor America’s veterans. From historic estates to small-town cemeteries, their presence was felt in ceremonies, parades, and memorial dedications that paid tribute to those who served.

Mount Vernon Tribute by George Washington Chapter

The George Washington Chapter hosted its annual Veterans Day commemoration at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens. A solemn wreath-laying ceremony honored both General George Washington and Mrs. Martha Washington. The event was co-sponsored by the Kate Waller Barrett Chapter NSDAR and featured participation from the Virginia SAR Color Guard and Scouting America Troop 113 of Alexandria. Distinguished guests included National SAR President General Michael Elston, past President General Joe Dooley, and chapter president Scot Bryant.  Chapter treasurer David Harrity served as master of ceremonies.

Philadelphia, Pa. – October 13, 2025—The National Parade honoring the birth of the United States Navy on October 13, 1775 and birth of the United States Marine Corps November 10, 1775 was held in Philadelphia, Pa., on October 13. Philadelphia was the location where both the Navy and Marine Corps were founded. Sgt Maj John Champe Chapter participated in the parade with a float towed by owner and Chapter member Warner Workman. Chapter President Barry Schwoerer rode the float wearing his Navy dress blue uniform and Chapter Vice President Mark Sink rode the float wearing his Marine Corps dress blue uniform. Virginia SAR Color Guard Commander Brett Osborn dressed in Navy Slops, and two Compatriots from the Pennsylvania SAR also rode the float. The float was decorated with graphics depicting Revolutionary War Navy and Marine Corps founders and leaders, Revolutionary War battles and famous ships of the early Navy. The SMJC Float was the only SAR float, and most visible SAR participant in the parade.

When Civics was taught in our public education system students memorized and later recited passages of many of our nations’ seminal documents – the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Even to this day I can recall from memory many of these passages that not only defined our nation but shaped the minds and development of those who were fortunate at an early age to be exposed to the philosophy and thinking of America’s Founders. The powerful and timeless message contained in President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address still rings true and in view of our current political divisiveness and deserves reexamining. 

To refresh your memory, the address was delivered by President Lincoln on November 19, 1863, during the dedication of Soldiers' National Cemetery  known today as Gettysburg National Cemetery. This hallowed ground was where the brutal Battle of Gettysburg - the high-water mark of the Confederacy - was fought four and one-half months earlier. The Civil War was America’s most brutal and costly war fought in an effort to save the unity our nascent nation. To this day its scars are forever seared into our national psyche even though it occurred well over one hundred years ago.

Grave Marking Ceremony at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church

Lovettsville, VA — November 2, 2025 On a beautiful autumn day, more than 60 SAR compatriots, DAR members, and guests gathered at the historic New Jerusalem Lutheran Church to honor five Revolutionary War patriots interred in its cemetery. The event was hosted by the Fairfax Resolves Chapter (Virginia SAR), Sergeant Major John Champe Chapter (Virginia SAR), and Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter (Maryland SAR).
