John Lee Cahoon of Roanoke

John Lee Cahoon of Roanoke, Virginia died Wednesday, October 11, 2023. He was a registered Professional Engineer and held a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
 
Upon graduation in 1959 he commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers and went on to became a Fixed Wing Army Aviator. As a Cold War Veteran, he had deployed to Germany in 1961 with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in response to the Berlin Wall and Cuban Missile crises. He left the Army as a Captain in 1964 to pursue engineering.
 
His Civil Engineering career included both design of multiple complex transportation and environmental projects as well as executive level positions and responsibilities within several major consulting engineering firms.
 
John was an active supporter of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and as a Corps Alumni Board member he established the first functional Corps Alumni Marketing and Recruiting Task Force
 
The religious aspects of fly-fishing for bass and trout was one of his passions. Teaching disabled veterans involved with Project Healing Water Fly-Fishing was his way of honoring his fallen comrades.
 
He paid forward by being an Elder in Colonial Presbyterian Church and a member of Roanoke Rotary Club.
 
Ever mindful of his military heritage, he was an active member of Sons of Confederate Veterans and Sons of the American Revolution. He was published in the Roanoke Times many times defending the Confederate soldiers.
 
 
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Linda Lee Hart, a son John Payne Cahoon and a grandson John Scott Largen and great grandson John Grayson Largen and brother Lawrence G. Cahoon. Preceded in death by wife, Sue Ellen Cahoon and brother, Hollis B. Cahoon.
 
A Memorial service will be held at Oakey’s South Chapel on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 12 (noon) with Reverend Brent T. Williams officiating. A Wake will be held from 1 to 3 pm at Oakey’s South Chapel.
